July 2020 Email sent by

Eileen Wilkins -  Director Faith Formation, Christ the King Church

Dear Families,

We hope this email finds you, and your families, healthy, safe, and enjoying summer. Thank you for your patience as we review our program for the upcoming 2020-2021 Faith Formation school year at Christ the King Church.  We have carefully evaluated all options including on-site classes and remote learning.  Our classrooms do not meet the current safety guidelines for social distancing outlined by the state of Connecticut.  The health and safety of our families and volunteers is very important to us. Therefore, we have decided not to meet on-site this year.

Instead, we are excited to offer a new Faith Formation Remote Learning Program this school year, which will include home-based activities and lessons coupled with twice monthly Zoom meetings with students and a Faith Formation Catechist.

While we continue to finalize the calendar, staff, and curriculum, we wanted to share some important logistics and also ask for your help:

  • The program will run from October - May.
  • Families with children in grades 1st-6th will follow the program Christ In Us from Sadlier Publications and families with children in grades 7th and 8th will continue to use Chosen and Altaration. We are reviewing various options for 9th grade.
  • Families will be provided with all print and online materials and updates throughout the year.
  • Catechists will send weekly emails to parents with lessons and activities.
  • Our hope is that each week, families will spend time reviewing and discussing the lessons and activities.
  • Twice a month, Catechists will lead Zoom discussions appropriate for each grade level. These discussions will allow for further exploration of the topics reviewed at home and will focus on the current liturgical calendar (examples: Advent in December, Lent in February and March).
  • More information will be sent out regarding Sacramental years. First Reconciliation is in second grade, First Holy Communion is in third grade, and Confirmation is in ninth grade.

This year might just be the perfect time to start teaching a Faith Formation class.  We know that the thought of standing in front of a class of children for an hour for 30 weeks can be intimidating and sometimes overwhelming. However,

  • Our smaller class sizes on Zoom, and the shortened sessions and calendar year, will be a great way to ease into teaching.
  • We will provide all Catechists with materials, activity suggestions, Zoom training, and calendars.
  • We will have many experienced catechists who will be returning who will serve as mentors and partners in planning and brainstorming ways to keep students engaged on Zoom and energized about their faith.
  • All Catechists must go through Safe Environment Virtus Training before our sessions start.
  • There are countless rewards to sharing your faith with the children of our parish, including watching your own faith grow as you build a community and grow together.

Please let me know by Friday, July 31st if you are interested in teaching a Faith Formation class this year and if you have a grade preference. Please feel free to reach out anytime with questions or concerns. The best way to contact me is via email. We can discuss Virtus training and other requirements to become a Catechist. Please feel free to reach out anytime with questions or concerns. The best way to contact me is via email.

More information about registering for classes and calendar dates will be forthcoming in the next couple of weeks.

I am grateful for your ongoing commitment to our parish community and I appreciate your consideration in helping support our children this coming school year.

Thank you,

Eileen Wilkins
